Established in 1964, Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) has a rich history. Originally known as the Jakarta Institute of Teaching and Education (IKIP Jakarta), UNJ transformed into a state university in 1999. Right here in Rawamangun, its main campus stands among four others spread across East and South Jakarta. Universitas Negeri Jakarta wasn’t always a comprehensive university. It began with a focus on education. Indonesia’s first president, Sukarno, merged the Faculty of Teaching and Education of Universitas Indonesia with the Teachers’ Education Institute to form IKIP Jakarta. This addressed a dualism in teacher education. This merger eventually led to the birth of UNJ on May 16, 1964. The university’s commitment to practical teacher training led to the establishment of Labschool High School in 1968. This “school laboratory” provides a space for aspiring teachers to hone their skills and for educational research. Universitas Negeri Jakarta has grown to encompass eight faculties. These faculties include Education Sciences, Languages and the Arts, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Engineering, Sports Sciences, Economics, and Psychological Education. Beyond its undergraduate programs, UNJ also offers postgraduate studies. In 2016, UNJ celebrated a graduating class of 3,906 students. This added to the over 105,000 alumni who have passed through its halls. In 2017, UNJ faced scrutiny due to plagiarism concerns, leading to the replacement of its rector. However, the university rebounded and achieved “Excellent Accreditation” in early 2021. This accreditation is valid until 2026. Today, Universitas Negeri Jakarta continues to shape future generations of educators and professionals. It boasts a student body of around 26,000, contributing to Jakarta’s vibrant academic landscape.
