Universitas Islam Syekh Yusuf Tangerang

On a sweltering day in 1966, amidst the tumultuous backdrop of the G30S/PKI uprising, a seed of hope was planted in Tangerang. This seed would blossom into Universitas Islam Syekh Yusuf Tangerang, a beacon of education in a city yearning for knowledge. Universitas Islam Syekh Yusuf Tangerang stands as a testament to the vision of three young men: Muh. Astary, M. Thamrin HR, and M. Sanny Iskandar. These students, studying in Jakarta, saw the educational disparity in their hometown and dared to dream of a brighter future. Tangerang’s educational landscape in 1966 was bleak. Even a simple middle school was a recent addition, with SMP Mardi Siswa, now SMP Negeri 1 Tangerang, established only in 1951. The prospect of higher education seemed a distant reality for most. The journey to universities in larger cities was expensive and inaccessible to many aspiring young minds. Driven by patriotic fervor and the spirit of the Kesatuan Aksi Mahasiswa (KAMI), these three students embarked on a mission. They resolved to establish Tangerang’s first university, a place where local youth could pursue their academic dreams without leaving their community. Universitas Islam Syekh Yusuf Tangerang was named after Sheikh Yusuf al Makassari al Bantani, a revered scholar, warrior, and national hero of both Indonesia and South Africa. Born in 1626 in Makassar, Sheikh Yusuf’s life was a tapestry of learning, resilience, and unwavering faith. He journeyed from Makassar to Banten, then to Yemen and across the Arab world, seeking knowledge and wisdom. His return to Banten, at the request of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa, marked the beginning of his role as an educator and, eventually, a leader in the resistance against Dutch colonialism. His bravery in the face of adversity, his unwavering commitment to justice, and his profound faith made him an inspiring figure, worthy of the university’s namesake. From its humble beginnings, Universitas Islam Syekh Yusuf Tangerang has grown into a diverse institution. It offers a wide range of programs, from Social and Political Sciences, Law, and Islamic Studies, to Engineering, Teacher Training and Education, and Economics. The university also houses a Postgraduate Program, catering to students pursuing advanced degrees in Administration, Law, and Management. Universitas Islam Syekh Yusuf Tangerang has become more than just an educational institution. It is a symbol of hope, resilience, and the pursuit of knowledge. It stands as a living tribute to Sheikh Yusuf’s legacy and the unwavering determination of its founders.
