Emerging from the bustling streets of Jakarta, the Universitas Indonesia (UI) beckons. It’s a beacon of knowledge, with a history as rich and vibrant as the nation it serves. The Universitas Indonesia whispers stories of its past, from its humble beginnings as a school for medical assistants in 1849 to its current status as a leading research university. The Universitas Indonesia’s roots lie in the School of Health Sciences and Vaccines, established by the Dutch East Indies government. As Indonesia moved towards independence, the school evolved, becoming the STOVIA (School tot Opleiding van Inlandsche Artsen) in 1898. Many STOVIA graduates became key figures in Indonesia’s fight for freedom. The Universitas Indonesia officially came into being on February 2, 1950, consolidating several faculties scattered across different cities. The initial rector, Ir. R.M. Pandji Soerachman Tjokroadisoerio, led the university from an office in a former opium factory building on Jl. Salemba Raya in Jakarta. Over the years, the Universitas Indonesia saw some of its faculties evolve into independent institutions, like the Bandung Institute of Technology and the Bogor Agricultural Institute. This streamlining allowed UI to focus on its core mission: providing world-class education and fostering research. The Universitas Indonesia’s main campus in Depok, a sprawling 320-hectare site, is a testament to this commitment. Did you know that UI dedicates 75% of its Depok campus to green space? Six lakes grace the campus, their names – Kenanga, Agathis, Mahoni, Puspa, Ulin, and Salam – subtly spelling “kampus,” the Indonesian word for campus. The iconic symbol of Universitas Indonesia, the kala-makara, embodies the university’s philosophy. This mythical creature, a fusion of Kala (representing the sun’s energy) and Makara (representing the earth’s energy), symbolizes the flow of knowledge. The tree and its branches in the logo represent the ever-expanding fields of science, nurtured by the water flowing from the makara. Even the student organizations reflect the Universitas Indonesia’s vibrant spirit. From the Marching Band Madah Bahana to the UI Model United Nations Club, students find avenues to explore their passions and contribute to the university’s lively atmosphere. The Universitas Indonesia is more than just a university. It is a living testament to Indonesia’s journey, a place where history and future intertwine.
