Universitas Budi Luhur

Established on April 1st, 1979, Universitas Budi Luhur has a fascinating story. It began as the Computer Science Academy (Akademi Ilmu Komputer or AIK). Dr. Djaetun HS had a vision: to create an institution that fostered both intelligence and virtue. He believed that intelligence without virtue could be dangerous, and virtue without intelligence could be easily exploited. Universitas Budi Luhur embodies this philosophy, reflected in its motto, “Cerdas Berbudi Luhur,” which translates to “Intelligent Virtuous.” Originally located on Jl. Budi Utomo No. 11 in Central Jakarta, the academy quickly gained recognition. It received its operational permit on August 11, 1981, with the government renaming it the Computer Knowledge Academy (APK). In 1983, APK Budi Luhur achieved registered status, a significant milestone. This allowed it to hold its first computer undergraduate exams, with examiners from the prestigious Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). This marked a pivotal moment. APK Budi Luhur produced Indonesia’s first computer science graduates. With the completion of its first campus buildings in 1985, the academy moved to its current location on Cileduk Raya. This expansion marked a period of rapid growth. Recognizing the increasing demand for computer skills, the Budi Luhur Education Foundation established the Budi Luhur Computer Electrical Engineering Academy (ATEK) and the Budi Luhur Computer Accounting Academy (AAK) in August 1985. This broadened the institution’s scope, offering more specialized training. The government acknowledged APK Budi Luhur’s progress. They upgraded its accreditation status in 1986. The academy’s name changed to the Academy of Informatics and Computer Management (AMIK) Budi Luhur. To meet the growing demand for higher education, the Budi Luhur Computer Science College (STPK) was established in the 1985-1986 academic year. This was followed by the Budi Luhur Computer Electrical Engineering College (STEK) and the Budi Luhur Computer Accounting College (STAK) in 1986, offering bachelor’s degree programs. In 1987, these three colleges merged under the Ministry of Education’s decree to form the Budi Luhur College of Informatics and Computer Management (STMIK). This streamlined the institution, offering various specializations within computer science. Over the years, Universitas Budi Luhur continued to evolve, adding faculties in Economics and Business, Engineering, Communication and Creative Design, and Social and Global Studies. Today, Universitas Budi Luhur offers a wide range of programs, from diploma courses to master’s degrees. It stands as a testament to Dr. Djaetun HS’s original vision. Universitas Budi Luhur has consistently promoted a balanced approach to education. It emphasizes intellect and virtue, preparing students to be successful and responsible members of society.
