A temple in Central Java inspired its name. Universitas Borobudur stands as an institution of higher learning in Jakarta. It embodies the spirit of its namesake. Universitas Borobudur was established in 1982. The Borobudur Education Foundation manages it. Raden Imam Soesatyo Prawirokoesoemo created the legal entity in 1971.
Before Universitas Borobudur, the foundation ran three academies. These were the Academy of Accountancy, the Academy of Finance and Banking, and the Academy of Foreign Languages. These academies offered Diploma III programs. They met the community’s need for middle managers.
The success of these academies paved the way for Universitas Borobudur. Ten years later, in the 1981-1982 academic year, Universitas Borobudur was born. It started with seven undergraduate programs. The university continued to expand its offerings. It now manages 21 study programs. These range from Diploma III to Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees.
The Directorate General of Higher Education authorizes all programs. The National Accreditation Board for Higher Education accredits them. Programs established before 2000 held the highest status. DIKTI granted them the status of “Disamakan”.
Universitas Borobudur’s academic and administrative services run smoothly. This is due to the hard work of its leaders and staff. It also benefits from harmonious coordination with the Borobudur Education Foundation.
By 2023, Universitas Borobudur and its academies had over 40,000 alumni. This includes 253 Doctor of Economics graduates and 202 Doctor of Law graduates. Tracking studies show that all alumni have found employment in various professions.
Universitas Borobudur aims to integrate education for the betterment of society. It seeks to advance knowledge, technology, culture, and the arts. By 2023, it offered 18 programs. These included diploma, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. Around 4,000 students attend its courses. They are taught by 200 permanent lecturers and over 100 visiting lecturers. All academic and administrative services use information technology. This ensures effective, efficient, and accurate service.
In line with community needs, Universitas Borobudur is always evolving. It periodically evaluates its curriculum. It improves the quality of its lecturers. It also develops its administrative services. This has resulted in public recognition of the quality of education it provides.
Universitas Pendidikan Borobudur conducts its educational activities across three campuses. Campus A is the main campus. It is located at Jalan Raya Kalimalang No. 1 in East Jakarta. Campus B is located at Jalan Slamet Riyadi No. 5 in East Jakarta. Campus C is located at Jalan Pemuda No. 7 Rawamangun in Jakarta.
The Borobudur Education Foundation was founded on March 11, 1971. Prof. Dr. H. Basir Barthos established it. He wanted to contribute to the nation’s progress through education. The YPB felt that public participation in higher education was lacking. In 1971, there were only about 270 private universities in Indonesia. Only 27 of these were in Jakarta. By 2023, there were over 2,500 private universities in Indonesia. More than 300 of these were in Jakarta.
YPB is a pioneer in providing higher education. It responded to community needs at the time. The discovery of national oil fields in 1968 led to economic progress. People needed skills in accounting, finance, and English. The Borobudur academies met this need. They are still thriving today.
The university also emphasizes independence and entrepreneurship. It aims to empower students. It encourages them to identify their potential and shape their own lives. It also instills a sense of responsibility. Students are encouraged to participate in community development. This holistic approach ensures the stability of the institution. It allows academic life to continue uninterrupted.
The name “Borobudur” reflects the university’s aspirations. The founders hoped to uphold knowledge, technology, and culture. They sought to emulate the grandeur of the Borobudur temple. They wanted to inspire greatness in their students and programs.
