Established on December 20 1972 the Universidad Nacional de Luján was born from a need. Argentina’s growing population demanded more access to higher education. Law 20 031 paved the way for its creation as part of a broader plan to reorganize higher education.

The Universidad Nacional de Luján quickly distinguished itself. It offered shorter more practical degrees. These degrees focused on agronomy and food science. This was perfect for the rapidly growing agricultural and industrial region. The Universidad Nacional de Luján also welcomed students over 25 without a high school diploma. This made education accessible to a wider range of people.

Ramón Rosell a soil expert became the first Rector of the Universidad Nacional de Luján. Emilio Mignone expanded the university creating regional centers. These centers were in General Sarmiento Campana Chivilcoy and 9 de Julio. This expansion strengthened the university during politically turbulent times.

However the Universidad Nacional de Luján faced a dark chapter. During the 1976 dictatorship the university was shut down. It was the only university to suffer this fate. This closure lasted four years five months and nine days. The university became a rallying point. Protests erupted with the motto Orgullosos de nuestra Universidad. Prominent figures like Ernesto Sabato Jorge Luis Borges León Gieco and Adolfo Pérez Esquivel condemned the closure.

At the time of its closure the Universidad Nacional de Luján had 1626 students. It also included 375 teachers and 126 non-teaching staff. It boasted a distance learning center laboratories and a budget of ARL 18 000 000. Its infrastructure included a 4 000 m2 building with well-equipped laboratories.

The Universidad de Buenos Aires UBA benefited from the closure. UBA took administrative control over UNLu’s regional centers. Much of UNLu’s equipment was moved to UBA buildings. The Universidad Nacional de Luján estimated its damages at over $225 million. This included both material and moral damages. The closure damaged the institution’s reputation and affected its students and graduates.

The Universidad Nacional de Luján reopened its doors in 1984. President Raúl Alfonsín oversaw its revival marking a victory for democracy and education. Today the Universidad Nacional de Luján thrives with a main campus and other locations. The main campus is located at the intersection of Ruta Nacional 5 and Ruta Provincial 7. It houses the central library classrooms laboratories and the Rector’s office.

The Universidad Nacional de Luján is organized into four academic departments. These are Basic Sciences Social Sciences Education and Technology. The university offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. These programs include Biological Sciences Nursing Environmental Information and Systems Engineering.

The university also boasts research institutes. These include the Institute of Ecology and Sustainable Development INEDES and the Institute of Geographical Research INIGEO.
