A vision unfolds before you. The Universidad de Manila stands tall. It is a testament to accessible education. This institution began as the City College of Manila in 1995. Mayor Alfredo Lim approved its creation.

Originally, the college occupied a 15-story building in Binondo. It was on Escolta Street. In 2006, it transformed. Mayor Lito Atienza renamed it Universidad de Manila. The university moved to its current location in Mehan Gardens.

Universidad de Manila has grown significantly. In 2020, it gained fiscal autonomy. Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso approved this change. The university became an independent department of Manila. It controls its finances and resources.

The university also expanded its physical presence. The Downtown Campus is now the Henry Sy Sr. Campus. A new Tondo Campus is also in the works. It will feature 48 classrooms and a gymnasium.

Universidad de Manila faced challenges. Early on, it struggled with low passing rates. There were also plans to merge it with another university. Students opposed this merger. The plans did not materialize.

The university overcame environmental concerns. The construction of the Mehan Garden building faced resistance. Eventually, the City Council approved the project. A five-story building was constructed.

Universidad de Manila embraced sports. It integrated sports into its curriculum. This supported the Manila Sports Academy. The academy offers free education to athletes.

The university is committed to quality education. In 2006, city officials elevated the college to a university. This provided more opportunities for Manila’s youth.

Universidad de Manila actively participates in international relations. It has a sisterhood relationship with Cheng Kung Commercial and Technical High School in Taiwan. This allows Universidad de Manila students to work independently.

Many notable figures have graduated from Universidad de Manila. This includes Emmanuel Pelaez. He was the 6th Vice President of the Philippines. Other alumni include comic artist Alex Niño and former Supreme Court Justice Serafin Cuevas.

Universidad de Manila continues to evolve. It provides quality education to the youth of Manila. It stands as a symbol of opportunity. The university’s story reflects Manila’s commitment to education. The UDMian spirit embodies resilience and excellence. As we conclude our visit, remember the legacy of Universidad de Manila.
