Did you know Universal Studios Hollywood opened in 1912? It started not as a theme park but a movie studio. German-American immigrant Carl Laemmle founded it on the Taylor Ranch. He had a vision beyond filmmaking. He wanted the public to see how movies were made.

In 1915 Laemmle hosted a grand opening. Ten thousand people attended. For a mere five cents they got a tour. They even got a boxed lunch with chicken. This early tour was fascinating. It showed the behind-the-scenes magic. Sadly it ended around 1930. Sound films arrived. The stages weren’t soundproofed.

Universal Studios Hollywood’s backlot has a dramatic history. It’s endured nine major fires. The first was in 1932. Embers from a brush fire caused $100,000 in damage. The 2008 fire was the most devastating. A blowtorch ignited asphalt shingles. It destroyed sets. Thousands of digital and film copies burned. The loss of analog audio master tapes was especially significant. Many irreplaceable recordings were lost. Yet the studio rebuilt.

The modern Universal Studios Hollywood theme park began in 1964. MCA took over Universal Pictures. They launched a new studio tour. It included dressing rooms and actual productions. This grew into a full-fledged theme park. The tram tour remains a core attraction. It still takes visitors through active backlots.

Over the years many attractions have opened and closed. The original tour had bleacher seating. Guests paid 25 cents. They could cheer and boo during silent films. Today visitors experience immersive rides. They can explore themed lands like Super Nintendo World. They can see the behind-the-scenes action. They can also enjoy shows and stunt demonstrations.

Universal Studios Hollywood continues to evolve. It’s a testament to Laemmle’s initial vision. It combines filmmaking history with cutting-edge entertainment. This is why Universal Studios Hollywood remains the Entertainment Capital of LA.
