What began as a humble initiative has blossomed into a global phenomenon. I am talking about the Universal Church. This church stands as a testament to unwavering faith and the transformative power of belief.
The Universal Church’s story began in Brazil on July 9, 1977. Pastor Edir Macedo held his first meetings at a bandstand in Rio de Janeiro. Guided by the Holy Spirit, he sought to spread God’s word. A former funeral home became the first church building. As attendance grew, a remodeled furniture warehouse accommodated 1,500 people. The Universal Church then expanded to other Brazilian cities. Today, it spans every state in Brazil.
The vision was always global. In the late 1970s and 80s, the Universal Church expanded into Spanish-speaking countries. Argentina, Spain, and Colombia were among the first. Later, it reached the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Universal Church now operates in over 150 countries. It welcomes people of all backgrounds.
In the United States, the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God Brazil was incorporated on May 5, 1987. The first US church opened in Manhattan, New York. Services were initially in English. Soon, churches opened for Spanish and Portuguese speakers too.
The Universal Church believes in the Holy Trinity. It aims to reveal the power of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. These forces can transform lives. God’s teachings were given to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Despite humanity’s sins, God sent His Son as a sacrifice. Jesus’ resurrection offers salvation. The Holy Spirit guides believers.
Baptism in water symbolizes inner transformation. Believers bury their sinful nature. They rise as new people ready to do God’s will. The Universal Church emphasizes an active faith. This creates a lifelong relationship with Jesus.
The Universal Church values the Lord’s Supper. It is a symbol of partaking in the body and blood of Jesus. It strengthens the church physically and spiritually. The Universal Church also believes in tithes and offerings. Tithing shows faithfulness. Offerings represent love for God. Serving God brings an abundant life.
Bishop Edir Macedo, the founder, was born on February 18, 1945. He dedicated himself to God’s work full-time. Macedo authored over 50 books on faith. His first book addressed demonic practices common in Brazil. People sought deliverance and healing. Many new churches opened as a result.
Macedo’s autobiography, “Nothing to Lose”, covers controversial issues. It tells of his struggles, incarceration, and triumph through faith. He reveals secrets and personal details. The books recount the purchase of Brazilian Record TV. They show attacks against him and the church. God proves faithful to those who are faithful.
The Living Faith Network is a 24-hour TV network. It airs programs of faith and testimonies. Universal Church pastors host the shows. A helpline offers counseling and prayer requests.
“Showdown of Faith” is a program hosted by Bishop Joshua Fonseca. It aims to change lives by breaking spiritual chains. It teaches salvation through faith.
