Imagine a bustling hub of knowledge. It existed once right here at Univercidade. This institution shaped the lives of thousands. Its story is one of ambition, innovation, and ultimately, decline.

Univercidade, or the University Center of the City of Rio de Janeiro, was founded in 1969. It quickly grew into one of the largest private universities in Rio. It once boasted 35,000 students. “À Frente do Seu Tempo” was its motto. It translates to “Ahead of Its Time”.

Univercidade offered a wide range of undergraduate courses. These spanned humanities, sciences, and biology. It also provided postgraduate programs. These included both Lato Sensu and Stricto Sensu programs.

Ronald Levinsohn controlled the university. He was head of the philanthropic organization that maintained Univercidade.

But behind the facade of academic excellence, trouble was brewing. Allegations of fraud surfaced. Alberto Dines claimed the institution laundered money. It allegedly concealed the illicit origins of Levinsohn’s wealth.

A parliamentary inquiry investigated these claims. It looked into fraudulent management and illicit enrichment. The inquiry also examined the misuse of public funds. Other issues included money laundering and poor working conditions.

The inquiry revealed delayed payments to employees. It discovered failures to pay union taxes. Failures extended to the National Institute of Social Security and the Length of Service Guarantee Fund. There were also accusations of diploma fraud and unregulated distance learning programs.

The Ministry of Education began to take notice. In 2011, the Law course faced administrative restrictions. This was due to consistently poor results. The results came from the National Student Performance Examination. The poor results limited the expansion of vacancies. For three consecutive years, the course scored below 3. This was on the General Course Index.

The situation worsened over time. Financial problems and management crises plagued Univercidade. In January 2014, the Ministry of Education decided to shut it down. Students were left without proper documentation.

Univercidade’s story serves as a cautionary tale. It highlights the importance of accountability. It shows the need for ethical leadership in educational institutions. Though its doors are now closed, its legacy remains. It reminds us of the need to protect the integrity of education. It underscores the value of every student’s academic journey. The pursuit of knowledge must be transparent.
