Before the United Muslims Migrant Association found its home here in 1985, this very spot was occupied by a Uniting Church, a place of worship for a different faith. Founded by Muslim families who migrated to Melbourne from Pakistan and India in the 1960s and 1970s, the United Muslims Migrant Association represents a vibrant blend of cultures and a strong commitment to faith. Those early families initially settled in Melbourne’s inner east, but as their families grew, they sought out the leafy suburbs like Doncaster. They found the Uniting Church here on George Street available for purchase in 1984. Pooling their resources, they purchased the site, marking the humble beginnings of the United Muslims Migrant Association. Today, the United Muslims Migrant Association stands as a testament to the growth and dynamism of Melbourne’s multicultural Islamic community, a place not just for worship, but for education, wellbeing, and inclusivity.
