“What if these walls could talk?” they might whisper tales of a congregation deeply rooted in Philippine history. Right here we stand before the Central United Methodist Church. It is the first Protestant church in the Philippines. Its story began during the American Occupation.

The Central United Methodist Church’s history is intertwined with Knox United Methodist Church. This connection arose from Filipino-American ties after Manila’s surrender in 1898. The first Protestant worship service occurred on August 28, 1898. Rev. George C. Stull officiated the service. Both American soldiers and Filipino civilians attended.

During the Philippine-American War, the congregation divided. The American members moved their services to the YMCA. In 1899, they formally organized. The first chapel was completed on December 23, 1901. It was replaced by a stone structure in November 1906. By 1932, it gained cathedral status.

The Liberation of Manila in 1945 brought destruction. The Central UMC suffered severe damage. Filipino and American troops fought against Japanese forces. The congregation reunited with Knox UMC. This union lasted until 1949. Central UMC was rebuilt on its original site along T.M. Kalaw Street.

Since its rebuilding, Central UMC’s demographics shifted. It transformed from a mainly American to a mixed Filipino and American congregation. The church stands at the corner of T.M. Kalaw Avenue and Taft Avenue. It faces Plaza Olivia Salamanca.

Juan Arellano originally designed the Central United Methodist Church. Its architectural style is Gothic Revival. The church was completed in 1949.

Several notable figures were members of this church. José Abad Santos was a former Chief Justice. He also served as acting President of the Philippines in 1942. Jorge Bocobo was a former Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines from 1942 to 1944.

Central UMC is more than a historical landmark. It offers services in Tagalog Ilocano and English. It also provides a free clinic. An Early Childhood Learning Center serves nursery and kindergarten students.

Today the Central United Methodist Church continues its mission. It welcomes all who seek spiritual growth. Its doors remain open to those wanting to participate in its ministry. The Central United Methodist Church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community service in the heart of Manila. It’s a place where history and spirituality converge.
