“A concrete giant a vertical village” This is the Unitée d’Habitation in Marseille. More commonly known as the Cité Radieuse or Radiant City. This remarkable structure stands before you a testament to the visionary architect Le Corbusier.

Built between 1947 and 1952 the Cité Radieuse wasn’t just a housing project. It was a bold experiment. A radical response to post-World War II housing shortages. Le Corbusier envisioned a self-contained community. A “vertical village” complete with shops schools medical facilities even a hotel.

Imagine a building that functions as a small city within a city. That’s what Le Corbusier created. The Cité Radieuse houses 337 apartments. Each apartment is a duplex spanning the building’s width. Interior corridors act as “streets” connecting the different levels.

The roof isn’t just a flat expanse. It’s a communal space. A rooftop park with a running track a children’s pool and even an open-air auditorium. Artfully concealed ventilation shafts add sculptural interest. This was Le Corbusier’s idea of a modern utopia. A place where city life and nature blend.

The Cité Radieuse was originally constructed using raw concrete. Breton brut. This material choice wasn’t just an aesthetic preference. Metal construction was too costly in the post-war era. This choice however significantly influenced brutalist architecture. The building’s raw concrete texture speaks to the post war era of scarcity and resourcefulness.

Today the Cité Radieuse is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s still inhabited. Its apartments are much sought after. Many are occupied by affluent residents. It’s a testament to enduring design and a fascinating example of a visionary project. It remains a symbol of Le Corbusier’s utopian ideals. The Cité Radieuse. A building that redefined urban living.
