Founded in 1971, the Instituto Biomédico started as part of the Federação das Escolas Isoladas do Estado da Guanabara FEFIEG. This federation later became FEFIERJ. Finally, in 1979, it became part of Uni-Rio now UNIRIO. Think of it as a phoenix rising through education.
The UNIRIO – Instituto Biomédico is located on the Frei Caneca campus in central Rio de Janeiro. The campus includes seven blocks. The main building is the Pavilhão Alberto Soares de Meirelles. It has seven floors. Also on campus is the Anfiteatro Soares de Meirelles. A library supports the academic work here.
This institute houses six academic departments. These departments cover a range of subjects. Biomedicine, Biology, Nursing, Nutrition, and Medicine are all studied here. Currently, the director is biologist Professor Marcello Xavier Sampaio. He previously worked in the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology.
The UNIRIO – Instituto Biomédico has a large community. Around 880 students study here. There are 75 faculty members and 36 staff. The Intercampi bus connects this campus to other university locations. This makes it easier for students and staff to move between campuses.
The departments at the UNIRIO – Instituto Biomédico cover diverse fields. Biochemistry is studied. Morphological Sciences and Physiological Sciences are explored. Genetics and Molecular Biology also have a home here. Microbiology and Parasitology are key areas of focus. Public Health rounds out the department offerings.
Several courses are offered at the Instituto Biomédico. Biomedicine is a full-time undergraduate course. Biological Sciences is offered through the Instituto de Biociências. Medicine is taught in collaboration with the Escola de Medicina e Cirurgia. Nursing students attend classes through the Escola de Enfermagem Alfredo Pinto. Nutrition courses are available both day and night. The Instituto Biomédico also offers a Master’s program in Genetics and Molecular Biology.
