Did you know Unión started as Villa Restauración? It was 1849. General Oribe founded it. He needed a base during the siege of Montevideo. At that time Montevideo was basically just the Ciudad Vieja.

Unión’s story is fascinating. It began during a civil war. Oribe’s forces surrounded Montevideo. He set up the Tribunal of Unión in this area.

The village of Restauración became important. It was the heart of Oribe’s operations. After the war in 1851, something special happened. Restauración became Villa de la Unión.

Unión transformed. From a village it grew into a town. Today, Unión is a vibrant neighborhood in Montevideo. It has a rich history and a strong identity.

The name Restauración meant something. It signified the seat of Uruguay’s restored legitimate government. Meanwhile, the colorados controlled Montevideo’s walled city.

Unión shares borders with many other barrios. These include Mercado Modelo, Villa Española, and Maroñas. It also borders Malvín Norte, Buceo, and Parque Batlle. La Blanqueada and Larrañaga are nearby too.

Important places mark Unión. The Sanctuary of the Miraculous Medal is here. People call it “Iglesia de la Unión”. Also, find the Parish Church of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Saint Cajetan Church and the Parish Church of St. Joseph are here too.

Unión offers education. Colegio y Liceo Santa Luisa de Marillac has been here since 1919. The Vicentian Sisters founded it. Lay people have run it since 1993.

A key road changed names. It was named José Gervasio Artigas in 1840. Artigas was a founder of Rio Plata federalism. He was a hero of Uruguay’s independence. After Oribe’s defeat the road became Avenida 8 de Octubre. It marked the end of the Great War in 1851.

By 1880, Villa Unión was a suburb. In 1902, it became a Montevideo barrio. Plaza Cipriano Miró was planned then. Carlos Racine, a French landscaper, designed it.

Unión prospered in the late 1960s. More buildings arose and trade increased. The government expanded streets. Avenida 8 de Octubre grew into a shopping center.

Modern Unión has evolved. Loan houses have sprung up. Mobile phone and video game shops are common. New housing complexes exist.

Today, Unión blends history and modernity. Historic buildings stand alongside new ones. Past, present, and future coexist here. Unión is a testament to Montevideo’s dynamic spirit. It embodies resilience and progress.
