In 1935 the Facultad de Ciencias Económicas y de Administración opened its doors. This impressive building in Montevideo’s Palermo neighborhood wasn’t always a center of learning. It once housed the Pedro Visca children’s hospital.
The Facultad de Ciencias Económicas y de Administración boasts a rich history. Its roots stretch back to 1829 and 1836. Then a School of Commerce existed under the Scholastic Fathers. The formal establishment of the Faculty however didn’t occur until 1932. President José Batlle y Ordóñez played a key role. He signed a decree in 1903 proposing the creation of a Faculty of Commerce. This eventually led to the 1932 law establishing the Facultad de Ciencias Económicas y de Administración.
The first year saw a modest enrollment of 8 accounting and 26 mercantile expert students. Imagine those early pioneers laying the foundation for this prominent institution. The 1908 Organic Law reorganized the University of the Republic. It separated the Faculty of Commerce transforming it into the National School of Commerce. This ultimately paved the way for the Faculty’s independent growth.
The Facultad de Ciencias Económicas y de Administración has grown significantly. In 2017 over 5000 students enrolled. It’s consistently the largest faculty in Uruguay. The building itself tells a story. It stands as a testament to the enduring commitment to economic and administrative education in Uruguay. The building’s transformation from a hospital to an educational hub reflects the evolving needs of the nation.
Today the Facultad de Ciencias Económicas y de Administración offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. These include degrees in accounting administration economics and statistics. It also houses a postgraduate center. This center offers advanced studies in various specializations. It is a testament to the commitment to continued learning and professional development.
An annex building the José Luis Massera Multifunctional Building is known locally as “El Faro” or “The Lighthouse”. It’s shared with the Engineering and Architecture Faculties. This extension was constructed to increase classroom capacity. The “Martyrs of Students” Aulario another important addition serves the university’s social area. It also houses the Faculty’s postgraduate center.
The Facultad de Ciencias Económicas y de Administración stands as a symbol of progress. It’s not merely a place of study. It’s a living archive reflecting Uruguay’s economic and social evolution. From its humble beginnings to its current prominent standing the Faculty’s story continues to unfold. Its future is as bright as the “Lighthouse” that stands as its symbolic extension. It represents a beacon of knowledge and opportunity. It serves as a gateway to a dynamic future in economics and administration.
