Remember that first service at Union Spring Baptist Church. It wasn’t in this grand building. No. The story of Union Spring Baptist Church begins much more humbly. In 1944 a small storefront at 1643 O’Farrell Street became the first sanctuary. Seven people formed the initial congregation. Their faith was the foundation. Their spirit ignited a flame. This small group chose the name First Baptist Church. However another church already held that name in the city. Sister Leola Washington suggested adding “Union”. First Union Missionary Baptist Church was born. This simple addition marked the beginning of a remarkable journey.
The church quickly outgrew its humble beginnings. A building fund started with just $47.50. Sister Gussie Twyman Vann served as the first treasurer. Their dedication secured a new location at 2398 Geary Boulevard in 1946. A ten-year mortgage was paid off in just seven years and seven months. The congregation celebrated this achievement in 1953.
Pastor Nathaniel N Reason led the church’s early growth. He guided the congregation spiritually. He oversaw financial and numerical expansion. Under his leadership a new building fund emerged. It began with $300 and a dream. The dream was a larger more modern church. The church needed more classrooms and better parking. Tragically Pastor Reason passed away in 1968 before this dream was realized.
The church continued its upward trajectory. Pastor Henry L Davis Sr. took the helm in 1969. The church’s increasing size led to the need for more space. Groundbreaking for a new church occurred on Easter Sunday 1976. The new edifice at 1001 Webster Street opened in December 1976. The mortgage was paid off by 1985. New classrooms were added. The church even purchased an apartment building.
The church continued its legacy through various pastors. Pastor Henry L Davis Jr. served from 1985 to 2000. Pastor DeWayne A Byrdsong led from 2002 to 2009. Pastor D E C Matthews served from 2011 to 2013. Dr Larry Jetton Jr. led until 2018. Deacon George Booth repeatedly stepped in during transitions. His dedication kept the church unified and thriving.
Today Union Spring Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community. This building is a beacon. It showcases the unwavering spirit of its members. It represents the enduring legacy of those seven founding members. Their small storefront has grown into this strong edifice. Union Spring Baptist Church’s story is one of faith hope and remarkable growth. It’s a story written in the hearts of its members for generations to come.
