Outdoor worship. Can you imagine what that was like in 1874? That is how the story of Union Lee Baptist Church began. We are standing before a plaque that commemorates this church. It is a testament to faith and community.

The Union Lee Baptist Church’s history is rich. According to oral tradition, the congregation started meeting in 1874. They gathered for outdoor worship services. A decade later in 1884, Leonard Eck made a donation. He donated land. The B.J. Lee family also contributed. They gave a building. With these gifts, the church was formally organized. Rev. Anthony Winn became the first pastor.

For several decades, the church grew steadily. By 1916, they needed more space. M.M. and Josephine Mitchell and G.A. Mitchell stepped forward. They donated the property where the church stands today. This was a significant moment in the history of Union Lee Baptist Church.

The Union Lee Baptist Church continued to expand its role in the community. In 1928 and 1929, a Rosenwald school was built. It was on the northwest corner of the church’s land. This school served students in rural Travis County. Education became a key part of the church’s mission.

Throughout its history, Union Lee Missionary Baptist Church has been active. It carried out ministries of education. It also provided community assistance. The church remains an important part of the area’s cultural heritage. This plaque honors that legacy. It marks the spot where faith and community intertwine. It is a reminder of the enduring spirit of Union Lee Baptist Church.
