Today, we stand before a testament to Saint Paul’s grand railroad history. Union Depot wasn’t always this elegant structure. The first Union Depot, built in 1881, was a chaotic affair. It served at least 12 lines but was plagued with problems due to its construction on swampy land. Imagine a building sinking and cracking under its own weight, a constant fear of collapse looming over everyone. That fear became a reality when fire ravaged the depot not once, but twice. Each time, the city rebuilt, but the dream of a truly grand station persisted. That dream was spearheaded by none other than railroad magnate James J. Hill. He envisioned a Union Depot that would solidify Saint Paul’s place as a major transportation hub. Unfortunately, Hill didn’t live to see his vision fully realized. The current Union Depot, a masterpiece of neoclassical design, opened its doors in 1920 after delays caused by World War I. The grand lobby, a sea of pink Tennessee marble and breathtaking Guastavino vaulted ceilings, hummed with the energy of over 20,000 passengers daily. Union Depot wasn’t just a train station. It was a microcosm of life itself with restaurants, barbershops, even a bowling alley. Today, Union Depot stands as a symbol of Saint Paul’s resilience and ambition. It’s a reminder of a time when the roar of trains echoed through these halls, carrying travelers and dreamers towards their destinies.
