What if a church could move with the times and still hold onto its roots? That’s the story of the Union Church of Manila. This church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith adapting to change.
The Union Church of Manila started in 1914. American Methodist and Presbyterian churches joined forces. They aimed to serve the spiritual needs of Americans in the Philippines. Their first home was the Emerson Chapel. It stood on Padre Faura Street in Malate.
After World War II, the original Padre Faura building was badly damaged. The Union Church community worked hard to rebuild it. Funds came from many places. The renovated building was beautiful. It was as lovely as the first time it was built in 1907.
By 1958, the Union Church of Manila needed more space. Its membership was growing. The Ermita area was becoming too crowded. So, the church moved to Makati. Makati was a booming district. The Union Church of Manila bought land there for P36 per square meter.
But change was coming. The Laurel-Langley Agreement was expiring in 1974. This agreement affected foreign ownership of land. The Union Church of Manila decided to sell its Buendia property. They signed a 50-year lease for land in Legaspi Village.
Architect Jose Zaragoza designed the new church. He created a “salakot” style roof. This made the church stand out. It distinguished itself from Makati’s business skyline. This unique building served the congregation until 1999.
The Union Church of Manila wanted a permanent home. In 1997, they made an agreement with Ayala Corporation. Ayala got two-thirds of the leased land. In exchange, they would build a new church. The Union Church of Manila would own it permanently.
While the new church was being built, services were held at the Equitable PCIBank theater. A banquet raised money for the church’s interior. Contributions poured in.
Finally, on November 4, 2001, the congregation moved into their new home. The building was dedicated on December 9, 2001.
Today, the Union Church of Manila stands tall. It has twice the space of the old church. There is a sanctuary that seats 800. There is a gym and fellowship areas. You’ll also find a resource center and a library. The church’s modern design is simple but beautiful.
Carol Aronis said that seeing their building become a reality was the greatest challenge. She added that by God’s grace they met the challenge.
