Ever smelled the rich aroma of brewing beer? Right here before you stands the Union-Brauerei in Bremen a testament to brewing history.

Founded in 1907 by Bremen restaurateurs the Union-Brauerei quickly became a local favorite. These savvy businessmen chose a prime location in the Osterfeuerbergviertel of Bremen-Walle. They built a brewery complex that included a brewhouse a machine and boiler house and a cellar building. They even included a home for the brewmaster. This is where the magic happened.

The brewery thrived for decades. Its beer was delivered fresh to local taverns by horse-drawn carts. Imagine the clatter of hooves on cobblestones the cheerful shouts of the drivers. They worked around the clock ensuring every pub had their fill of Union’s brew. The brewery was such a local success that even during World War II after a bombing raid in 1944 the 16th Police Precinct briefly found refuge in the brewery’s administrative building. This only lasted until 1945 when a bomb destroyed the building and a nearby pitch factory. Amazingly though the brewery restarted production in 1945 under US military administration.

Then in 1965 the Union-Brauerei was acquired by Haake-Beck AG. It closed in 1968. The brewery buildings however remained standing. For decades they housed various small businesses.

Fast forward to 2014. Architect Luder Kastens and former manager of Beck & Co Markus Zeller had a vision. They decided to revive the Union-Brauerei. They began renovating the historic brick buildings. Their efforts paid off. The Union-Brauerei reopened in December 2015. Today it not only brews excellent beer but also offers tours tastings and even brewing workshops for women. The brewery’s rebirth is a triumph of preservation and innovation. It’s a place where the past and present beautifully intertwine. Now you can appreciate this historic landmark.
