In 2007, a unique shopping experience emerged in Bundoora: the Uni Hill Factory Outlets. Uni Hill Factory Outlets quickly became a landmark in the University Hill area. This bustling hub wasn’t always dedicated to retail therapy. The land holds a rich history, dating back to 1920. The Australian Red Cross used the site as a farm for convalescing tuberculosis patients. Later, it transformed into the Janefield Colony for the Treatment of Mental Defectives, a facility for children with intellectual disabilities. This facility operated until 1995. The Kennett Liberal government closed the facility. The residents were relocated north to Plenty Residential Services. The land was then sold, paving the way for the RMIT Technology Estate. This project, however, was abandoned due to financial constraints. The land eventually found its purpose with MAB Corporation, who envisioned the Uni Hill Factory Outlets we know today. Uni Hill Factory Outlets expanded significantly in 2014. It grew from 13,700 square meters to an impressive 19,600 square meters. This expansion cemented its position as a premier shopping destination in Melbourne’s north. Stores like Nike, Adidas, Puma, and Calvin Klein call Uni Hill Factory Outlets home. Shoppers can find a wide selection of discounted fashion, footwear, homewares, and more. This diverse retail landscape offers something for everyone. Today, Uni Hill Factory Outlets welcomes approximately 2.8 million visitors annually. This shopping center continues to thrive. It stands as a testament to the area’s transformation and resilience.
