Ever wondered what the letter “X” has to do with a university building? Here at Uni Gebäude X in Konstanz, the mystery unfolds. This is not just another building. It is a symbol of progress and innovation.

Uni Gebäude X is more than bricks and mortar. It represents the future of learning at the Universität Konstanz. The state of Baden-Württemberg invested nearly 70 million Euros into this modern construction. The University of Konstanz added four million Euros for media technology.

Imagine this space in 2027. Students bustling about and professors engaging in lively discussions. Uni Gebäude X is designed to be a central hub for the campus. It will be a place for scientific exchange and collaboration.

The building is actually two separate structures. There is an office building plus a seminar and lecture hall building. They connect underground. Above ground, a grand staircase separates them. This creates a pedestrian-friendly link between the Hockgraben and the campus center.

Inside Uni Gebäude X, you will find about 9,000 square meters of space. There are offices, seminar rooms, and a lecture hall. The lecture hall alone has 400 seats. You will also find student workspaces, a cafeteria and a public event space.

Uni Gebäude X is being built according to the Passivhaus standard. It includes a green roof and a photovoltaic system. The photovoltaic system has a peak output of around 147 kilowatts. These features are part of the university’s climate strategy.

Professor Dr. Katharina Holzinger, the Rector of the University of Konstanz, sees Gebaude X as a turning point. It paves the way for sustainable renovations across the university. It provides space needed for renovations in the core buildings.

The building’s design allows for flexibility. Its skeleton structure reduces the number of load-bearing elements. Flat ceilings accommodate technical installations. This ensures adaptability for future needs.

During construction, spans of up to 17 meters for the lecture hall needed to be bridged. Prestressed concrete beams were used. These support the columns of the floors above.

In November 2024, the topping-out ceremony was celebrated. By then, the vision of Uni Gebäude X was well on its way to becoming a reality. It offers nearly 2,000 seats in over 30 seminar rooms.

Minister Petra Olschowski aptly stated that the letter X symbolizes the search for the unknown. May all who use this building find joy and success within its walls.

Uni Gebäude X stands as a testament to sustainability, collaboration, and the pursuit of knowledge. It embodies the spirit of the University of Konstanz. A place where the future is shaped, one lecture, one seminar, and one idea at a time.
