Can you imagine a university born from the dreams of doctors? Right here in Tampico, the Universidad del Noreste, or UNE, stands as a testament to that vision. Founded in 1970, UNE was Tamaulipas’s first private university. It started with a group of local doctors, led by Dr. Jose Sierra Flores, who yearned for a more innovative approach to higher education in Mexico. Originally called the “Instituto de Ciencias Biologicas del Noreste,” it began with the Dr. Jose Sierra Flores School of Medicine. UNE has been a pioneer, introducing various bachelor’s degrees in fields like pharmaceutical chemistry, biology, psychology, and graphic design. They also established master’s programs in ecology and family therapy. The 1990s saw the addition of “Prepa UNE,” their preparatory school, and accreditation by the Federation of Private Mexican Institutions of Higher Education (FIMPES). In 2000, UNE launched its “Modern Educational Plan 2000” and opened the Foreign Language Center. Further recognition came in 2005 with accreditation from the National Association of Universities and Higher Education Institutions (ANUIES). UNE’s School of Medicine opened the Teaching Center of Medical Aptitudes and Skills (CEDAM) in 2007. This was Tamaulipas’s first Medical Simulation Center, equipped with robotic patients for students to practice procedures. The center expanded in 2010 with more advanced robotic equipment. UNE’s commitment to medical education is further demonstrated by the School of Medicine’s approval by the Mexican government to confer Physician-Surgeon degrees. The school holds accreditation from the Mexican Council for the Accreditation of Medical Education (COMAEM) and is listed by the World Health Organization. UNE’s reach extends beyond the local area, attracting students from around the globe. Many international students board at the school, creating a diverse and vibrant community. From its humble beginnings as a medical school, UNE has grown into a comprehensive university with five academic departments encompassing 20 schools. These departments include Health Sciences, Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Behavioural and Educational Sciences, Arts and Humanities, and Economic and Administrative Sciences. UNE is more than just classrooms and degrees. It’s a place where the dreams of doctors transformed the educational landscape of Tamaulipas, opening doors to students from near and far.
