Sculpted in steel, Undine rises from the Elbe. The Undine kommt sculpture, a captivating piece by Angela Hampel, stands as a testament to a tale as old as the river itself. The sculpture, installed near the Molenbrücke in Dresden-Pieschen in 2010, wasn’t always here. Before gracing this spot, she stood directly on the Hafenmole. Undine kommt, meaning “Undine arrives,” captures a pivotal moment in the mythical story of Undine. She is a water spirit venturing onto land, seeking a human connection to gain a soul. This sculpture forms a pair with another, “Undine geht” or “Undine leaves.” Originally created in 1998 for a project called “An Elbe und Rhein,” the pair was meant to reside in Dresden and Bonn. The Undine kommt sculpture found its home in Pieschen. However, its counterpart in Bonn lost its place after the project ended. Now, its sister sculpture, “Undine geht,” stands on the banks of the Elbe in Johannstadt, reuniting the pair within Dresden’s Elbian landscape. They represent two parts of the same story, a tale of transformation and the search for belonging. The Undine sculptures invite us to reflect on our own connections to nature and our search for meaning in the world around us. They stand as reminders of the power of art to capture timeless stories, transforming metal and myth into tangible experiences.
