Hidden in plain sight, Underexposed Arts challenges perceptions. Underexposed Arts isn’t just an exhibition. It’s a conversation starter about representation. Founded in 2008 by actor Fraser James and artist Franklyn Rodgers, Underexposed Arts aimed to spotlight positive Black role models. The initial project, a collection of 30 portraits of Black British actors, debuted at the National Portrait Gallery. Each portrait was accompanied by “Gems of Knowledge,” inspiring words from the actors themselves. Underexposed Arts found a permanent home in Peckham in 2019, thanks to Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts. Six portraits from the original collection now grace the academy’s windows. The project expanded in 2022 with “The Next Gen,” featuring 20 Black British and Dual Heritage artists and activists. This collection highlights diverse voices and perspectives. Underexposed Arts continues to evolve. It seeks to inspire creativity and critical thinking through exhibitions, films, talks, and educational programs. It’s a testament to the power of art to challenge the status quo and celebrate diverse talent. Underexposed Arts reminds us to look deeper, to see the stories behind the faces, and to recognize the richness of underrepresented voices.
