Why did a former radio station become a hub for environmental education? Here at the Umweltzentrum Hollen, the answer unfolds. The Umweltzentrum Hollen isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to transformation, a place where history whispers of changing times. Originally built in 1937 as a radio station for the Adelheide airfield, the building at Holler Weg 35 in Ganderkesee has seen remarkable changes. The Umweltzentrum Hollen’s journey began in the early 1990s. Dedicated teachers envisioned an environmental education center for the Delmenhorst/Oldenburg region. Their initial plans for a center in Delmenhorst fell through. However, their persistence paid off. Ganderkesee’s mayor and community director stepped in. They convinced Emmo Poetzsch, a partner in the environmental company Umweltschutz Nord, to purchase and renovate the dilapidated building in Hollen. This act of faith laid the foundation for the Umweltzentrum Hollen. Starting in August 1995, the center operated “ambulantly,” conducting programs in the open landscape. The official opening of the renovated building came in May 1996, with Lower Saxony’s Environmental Minister Monika Griefahn presiding. The Umweltzentrum Hollen focuses on education for sustainable development. It offers a diverse range of courses. Topics include nutrition and agriculture, biodiversity, nature and science, and energy conservation. The center caters to school groups, primarily elementary schools, but also secondary schools and adults. It serves the Oldenburg district and the city of Delmenhorst. The Umweltzentrum Hollen has been recognized for its work by the German UNESCO Commission and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. It continues to thrive. In recent years, the center has hosted over 850 events annually. The Umweltzentrum Hollen stands as a beacon of sustainability, offering a unique blend of history and education. Its transformation from radio station to environmental center is a story of community vision and dedication.
