How about we wander through a garden where art breathes? This is the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum. It is an oasis of art and nature right here in Austin.

The Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum is dedicated to the work of Charles Umlauf. He was an American sculptor. In 1985 Charles and Angeline Umlauf donated their home, studio, and 168 Umlauf sculptures to the City of Austin. Isn’t that an incredible gift?

The city then built a museum on adjoining property in 1991. This was done with private funds. Today the museum and gardens are maintained through grants and donations. The City of Austin also contributes.

Charles Umlauf taught at the University of Texas at Austin for 40 years. He sculpted from a young age. He even took classes at the Art Institute of Chicago at age 11.

Umlauf is known for his expressive sculptures. These often explore humanistic and religious themes. He used many materials including rose quartz and Brazilian rosewood. Did you know Umlauf has more sculptures on public display in Texas than any other sculptor?

The Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum isn’t just about Umlauf himself. It also features contemporary art exhibitions. These showcase Texan and Southern artists. Past exhibits have included James Surls, Farrah Fawcett, and Luis Jimenez.

Farrah Fawcett was not only a famous actress. She was also a student and muse of Umlauf. The Umlauf offers an annual prize to an emerging Austin-based artist. The award includes a stipend and a solo exhibition at the museum.

As you wander the garden notice the landscape. A pond, waterfall and native plants create a tranquil setting. You can even touch the bronze sculptures. This is a unique feature of the Umlauf.

Umlauf’s sculptures are diverse. They range from expressionism to neoclassical realism and abstraction. He sculpted family groupings, animals and religious figures. Some works are models for larger sculptures around Austin.

The Umlauf makes art accessible to everyone. The garden’s bronze sculptures are made for touching. This is especially beneficial for blind and visually impaired guests. The grounds are wheelchair accessible.

The Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum is more than just a museum. It is a place where art and nature intertwine. It preserves Charles Umlauf’s legacy. It also engages the public with art in creative ways. Take a stroll and discover your favorite sculpture. Let the beauty and serenity of the Umlauf inspire you.
