Deep in the Hungarian heartland lies the town of Üllő. It’s a place whispering tales of ancient trade routes and echoes of a vibrant past. Üllő sits nestled approximately 25 kilometers southeast of Budapest’s bustling center. This seemingly quiet town holds a secret, an archaeological treasure trove known as Üllő5. Üllő5 isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a window into the Late Sarmatian period, a time between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. Imagine skilled artisans crafting fireproof cooking pots and vessels, their hands shaping the very clay that would become historical artifacts. The clay itself wasn’t of the highest quality, but its accessibility, found just a meter or two below the surface, made it ideal. This distinctive gray, granular pottery, known as Üllő5 pottery, has been discovered throughout the north-central Great Hungarian Plain. This widespread distribution speaks to the vibrant trade networks that crisscrossed this region. Üllő5 wasn’t just a local hub. It was a key player in a larger economic system, connecting communities and cultures through the exchange of goods. The discovery of Üllő5 during the construction of the M0 motorway was a monumental event. This massive excavation, covering 40 hectares, unearthed over 8,200 objects. The sheer scale of the project required the collaboration of six archaeological teams. They worked tirelessly to uncover the secrets buried beneath the surface. Today, thanks to the painstaking work of specialists at the Kossuth Museum in Cegléd, these tens of thousands of pottery artifacts have been restored. They now form a collection of European significance. Üllő5 offers us a glimpse into a world long past, reminding us of the rich history that lies beneath our feet. The echoes of the Sarmatian people resonate in the pottery they left behind, a testament to their ingenuity and the vibrant trade that shaped their lives. Their legacy lives on in Üllő, a quiet town holding a treasure trove of history.
