Hidden in plain sight near Copenhagen Airport lies Ullerup. It’s a village steeped in history. Ullerup whispers tales from the medieval ages. Originally called “Utlunde,” meaning wasteland or thicket, it evolved. By 1370, its name shifted to Ullerup. King Christian II invited Dutch farmers to Amager in 1521. He wanted them to cultivate the land and supply the royal court. By the 17th century, these Dutch settlers owned most of the farms in Ullerup, including the notable Raagaard. Around 1800, Ullerup consisted of seven farms and two agricultural holdings. Fifty years later, the village, then known as Uglerup, had grown to twelve independent farms, three houses, and five houses without land. Sadly, progress came at a cost. In 1971, several farms around Ullerupstræde were burned down. This made way for Copenhagen Airport’s new parallel runway. Today, Ullerup stands as a quiet testament to its rich past. It’s a serene hamlet nestled within the bustling municipality of Tårnby. A stark reminder of the ebb and flow of time and progress.
