Did Uli Mariss truly exist? Here at the Uli Mariss Hütte, nestled in the mountains of Planken, Liechtenstein, the air is thick with the whispers of his tale. The Uli Mariss Hütte stands as a testament to a controversial figure from the Swabian War of 1499. This simple mountain hut is more than just a rest stop for hikers. It evokes the memory of a man who, according to legend, betrayed his countrymen for a handful of coins. The story goes that Uli Mariss, a resident of Schaan, showed the Swiss forces a secret path over the Saroja Saddle. This path led down to the Frastanz Alp, where the unsuspecting Swabian army lay encamped. This act of betrayal allowed the Swiss to launch a surprise attack. Victorious, the Swiss leader, Heini Wolleb, asked Uli Mariss what his reward would be. Mariss, expecting a handsome sum, knelt and presented his hat to the captain. Instead of gold, however, a swift sword stroke ended Mariss’s life. His head is said to have landed in his own hat, a grim symbol of his ill-gotten gains. The Uli Mariss Hütte is not just a place to rest your weary legs. It’s a place to ponder the choices people make in times of war. It’s a place to contemplate the fine line between heroism and treachery. From here, ambitious hikers can conquer the Saroja peak, standing tall at 1659 meters. The climb is a short but challenging 0.5 kilometers. It offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. As you stand here, at the Uli Mariss Hütte, remember the legend. Imagine the events that transpired centuries ago on these very slopes. And perhaps ask yourself, was Uli Mariss a traitor, or simply a man caught in the tides of war?
