How did the city of Überlingen become the second-largest in the Bodenseekreis district? Let’s explore its story. Überlingen is a German city. It sits on Lake Constance’s northern shore in Baden-Württemberg. It is near the Swiss border. This location has shaped its long history.

Überlingen’s past goes back to Roman times. Settlements existed here even before the Romans arrived. Stone Age people lived along Lake Constance. Archaeological finds show they thrived in small communities. They hunted, fished, and farmed.

The Romans came around 15 BCE. Emperor Augustus’s troops moved through the area. They needed the lake for troop transport. They built ships and maintained them here. A Roman road ran from Stockach to Überlingen. It continued along the lake to other towns.

Conflicts arose as Roman power weakened. Germanic groups became stronger. Settlements burned. Villages were reclaimed by nature and then by people again. Families emerged as warrior leaders. They defended against Romans and other groups.

The Alemannic dukes held their seat in Überlingen. In 770, Überlingen was called Iburinga. Before that, it was likely Gunzoburg. Duke Gunzo of Swabia lived here in 641. His villa was probably near the inner moat.

The Holy Roman Empire expanded. Überlingen began to flourish. Trade increased. The city likely gained market rights between 1180 and 1191. By 1226, it had a Jewish cemetery. Emperor Barbarossa may have established the market.

In the late 14th century, Überlingen became a free imperial city. Emperor Charles V broadened its market rights in 1547. Trade in grain and salt was prohibited within 15 kilometers.

Überlingen prospered from the 13th to 16th centuries. Grapevine cultivation was widespread. The climate was good. The city had a profitable hospital industry. The Holy Ghost Spital owned much land. Impressive buildings were constructed. These included the St Nikolaus Munster. A City Hall was built. Residences were erected for spital doctors. Überlingen’s art, architecture, and fortifications reflected its wealth.

The city played a key role in the German Peasants’ War in 1525. Überlingen helped free Radolfzell from besieging soldiers. 150 prisoners were taken and executed. As a reward, Überlingen could display a shield. It featured a drawn sword, the Habsburg hawk, and the imperial eagle.

During the Thirty Years War, Swedish soldiers besieged Überlingen. In 1632 and 1634, the city’s defenses held. Even when walls were breached in 1634, residents fought back. The invaders withdrew. This was seen as a miracle by the Virgin Mary. Every year, Überlingen holds a Sweden Procession to remember this.

In 1803, Überlingen lost its status as a free imperial city. It became part of the Duchy of Baden. The city’s consular system was restructured. It became the administrative seat for the district.

The city faced economic decline. However, its mineral waters were rediscovered. These had healing properties. A spa hotel was built. Notable people visited. In 1895, a railway link improved transportation. Überlingen became a spa city.

During World War II, a subcamp of Dachau concentration camp was near Überlingen. Detainees built an underground facility. It was for military armaments. Many died during this time. In 1945, a bombing raid damaged the city. French troops arrived. A fire destroyed buildings on the market square.

Today, Überlingen is a resort town. It is known for its health cures. It was Baden-Württemberg’s first Kneippheilbad. The city has a shore promenade and a spa. Überlingen has also joined the Cittaslow movement. It protects against overdevelopment.
