UCL Ramsay Hall stands on Maple Street. It is near Tottenham Court Road. This puts it right on the pulse of central London. The location is on the border of Fitzrovia and Bloomsbury.
Maxwell Fry designed UCL Ramsay Hall. It opened in the autumn term of 1964. UCL Ramsay Hall forms a unified building with the YMCA Indian Student Hostel. Ralph Tubbs designed the hostel. Both buildings were constructed at the same time.
UCL Ramsay Hall boasts around 450 bedrooms. It also features a dining hall and common rooms. These surround a central courtyard.
In 2008, UCL Ramsay Hall underwent a major refurbishment. An eight-story extension was added. This added 91 rooms. The project cost £8 million. Levitt Bernstein were the architects. The project won a Camden Building Excellence Award in 2009. The extension earned a BREEAM “very good” rating. Ten more bedrooms were added in 2010. Further renovations occurred in 2018. These focused on upgrading the common lounge.
But UCL Ramsay Hall is more than just bricks and mortar. Coldplay’s members met here. They lived at the hall. Can you believe that? Christopher Nolan lived here too. He studied English literature at UCL. He was also a member of the film society.
Outside of UCL term time, UCL Ramsay Hall transforms into a hostel. It welcomes travelers from all over. The Courtauld Institute of Art’s Conway Collection has numerous images of the building.
