Established in 1878 UC Law San Francisco boasts a rich history. It was initially known as the University of California Hastings College of the Law. This first law school in the University of California system has a unique structure. It’s not directly governed by the University of California Regents. This independence has shaped its development.

Serranus Clinton Hastings a former Chief Justice of California founded UC Law San Francisco. He generously donated $100000. This substantial gift fueled the school’s creation. His vision however wasn’t entirely embraced by the initial board of directors. They prioritized vocational training. Hastings desired a broader liberal arts education. This difference in opinion caused significant tension.

The school faced challenges early on. It lacked a permanent location for many decades. It moved between sixteen different temporary sites. This transient existence impacted its academic stability. The lack of a dedicated library further hindered its development. It even lost its membership in the Association of American Law Schools twice.

The institution’s fortunes shifted dramatically under Dean David E Snodgrass. His leadership from 1940 to 1963 proved transformative. He oversaw the construction of the first permanent building in 1953. This marked a significant turning point for UC Law San Francisco. His innovative “65 Club” hiring strategy also boosted the school’s prestige. He recruited renowned retired professors from elite universities. This brought significant academic experience to the school.

The name UC Law San Francisco is relatively new. After years of research a commission acknowledged founder Serranus Clinton Hastings’s involvement in the California genocide. This led to a comprehensive review and a name change. The law school underwent a rebranding in 2023. The name change removed any association with a controversial figure.

Today UC Law San Francisco stands tall in San Francisco’s Civic Center. It offers a three-year Juris Doctor program. It also provides specialized studies. These specializations cover various areas of law including civil litigation criminal law and international law. The school also boasts an impressive alumni network. This network includes prominent figures in various fields. Kamala Harris the 49th Vice President of the United States is a notable alumna. The school maintains a strong reputation. It attracts students from diverse backgrounds. UC Law San Francisco continues to contribute to legal scholarship and the profession.
