On a stormy night in 1951, tragedy struck just off the coast from U.S. Coast Guard Station Wilmette. Radio contact was lost with CG 30315. The crew, BM3 Robert Sawyer and EN1 Max Wage, were searching for a missing vessel with three duck hunters on board. The hunters’ boat was found, but CG 30315 vanished into the stormy lake, never to be seen again. U.S. Coast Guard Station Wilmette, established in 1931, stands today as a reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of those who patrol the often-treacherous waters of Lake Michigan. This station, replacing the old Evanston Station run by Northwestern University students, quickly became a vital part of the community. It has responded to countless calls for help, including a search for the ill-fated United Airlines Flight 380, which crashed into the lake in 1965.
