The Tyee Educational Complex, originally Tyee High School, opened its doors in 1963, serving the growing community between Burien, Des Moines, and Tukwila. This wasn’t just any school. It was designed to be a beacon of education, reflecting the hopes and dreams of a vibrant community. The Tyee Educational Complex wasn’t content with the traditional one-size-fits-all approach. Starting in the 2005-2006 school year, Tyee High School embarked on a bold experiment. The single large school transformed into three smaller, more focused learning communities: The Academy of Citizenship and Empowerment (ACE), Global Connections High School, and Odyssey. This shift aimed to create a more personalized and engaging learning experience for every student. It was a radical departure from the norm, but it was driven by a deep commitment to student success. Tyee’s story takes a fascinating turn in 1993. A teacher’s dedication led to the construction of an on-site observatory, one of the few in the nation at the time. This teacher’s innovative spirit earned them Washington State’s Golden Apple Award. The observatory stands as a testament to Tyee’s commitment to going above and beyond in the pursuit of knowledge. The school’s motto, “Tyee CARES: Collaborate, Achieve, Respect, Empower, Support,” reflects its dedication to fostering a positive and supportive environment.
