Twisted Postbox. What a peculiar sight! It looks like someone took a perfectly ordinary red postbox and playfully tied it in a knot. This quirky sculpture, officially known as the Twisted Postbox, is the brainchild of artist Alex Chinneck. He’s known for his surreal urban interventions, transforming everyday objects into extraordinary works of art. The Twisted Postbox, part of his “Alphabetti Spaghetti” series, appeared overnight in London, along with similar sculptures in Margate and Sheffield. Each location holds personal significance for Chinneck. London is where he launched his first public artwork back in 2012: 312 identically smashed windows in a derelict warehouse. His second project, a sliding house with curving bricks, took shape in Margate in 2013. And now, he graces London’s Caxton Street with this permanently twisted postal icon. Sadly, you can’t actually mail a letter in this particular postbox. Its purpose is purely artistic. Chinneck’s aim is simple. He wants as many people as possible to see and enjoy his work. He brings a touch of the extraordinary to the ordinary, inviting us to pause and appreciate the unexpected amidst the familiar. The Twisted Postbox is more than just a sculpture. It’s a whimsical reminder of the power of art to transform our everyday perceptions. It’s a symbol of creativity and playfulness. And it’s a testament to the rich tapestry of artistic expression that graces London’s streets.
