Here in front of me stands the Turm vom kleinen Lebensglück Sculpture. What stories could this artwork tell us?

The Turm vom kleinen Lebensglück Sculpture graces the Reiferbahn green space. This area holds a special place in Rostock’s history.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine the Reiferbahn long ago. Reifers, Reepers or Seilers were residents here. They crafted ropes for ships along Paulstrasse. As early as 1280, “Henricus, repslage” was mentioned. This profession was important during the age of sailing. These craftsmen provided essential products for Rostock’s trading ships.

In 1865, Helmuth Mentz built a 300-meter-long covered track. It included a stone machine and drying house. But in 1931, Mentz’s heirs sold it to the city.

The “Rostocker Anzeiger” reported that a piece of artisan romanticism was lost. Yet, this sale allowed the Reiferbahn to be improved with landscaping.

The trees surrounding the Turm vom kleinen Lebensglück Sculpture are old. Lindens, chestnuts and oaks are here. They are far older than the landscaping improvements.

In 1975, the Reiferbahn green space was placed on the district monument list. A year later, it was renovated. Along Paulstrasse, new plantings included maple, ornamental cherry and barberry.

Now let’s talk about the Turm vom kleinen Lebensglück Sculpture. It was erected in 1981. Reinhard Schmidt created it. But he passed away the year before. Jo Jastram, Reinhard Dietrich and Erhard John completed his work. The Turm vom kleinen Lebensglück Sculpture became an artistic enhancement of the park.

The Turm vom kleinen Lebensglück Sculpture stands as a testament to the area’s evolution. From rope makers to a green oasis with art. It blends history and art. It offers a space for reflection.

The Turm vom kleinen Lebensglück Sculpture is more than just a monument. It is a symbol of Rostock’s spirit. It reflects craftsmanship, nature and art. It embodies the “small happiness” of life.
