Standing before Kraftwerk.Rostock, a former power plant transformed into an arts and culture hub, it’s hard to imagine the industrial might that once pulsed through these halls. Now, vibrant art exhibitions, captivating theater performances, and pulsating music fills the air. You are now stepping inside a piece of history, a testament to the city’s rich industrial past.

Kraftwerk.Rostock was once known as Kraftwerk DMR, a vital cog in Rostock’s industrial landscape. It was a place where coal was turned into energy, powering homes and businesses. The building was built in 1994. The power plant was operated by the Kraftwerks- und Netzgesellschaft mbH (KNG) and played a crucial role in supplying electricity and district heating to the growing city. However, as the energy landscape evolved, the need for coal-fired power plants diminished. In 2021, the KNG announced their intention to decommission the plant by 2030.

But instead of falling into disrepair, Kraftwerk.Rostock was given a new life. The Kunst- und Kulturvereins Kraftwerk took over the space, transforming it into a vibrant cultural center. The former control room, once filled with dials and gauges, now serves as a stage. The enormous turbine hall now echoes with the sounds of music and laughter. The cooling towers, once monuments to a bygone era, now stand as reminders of Rostock’s industrial past, repurposed as a symbol of the city’s transition toward a brighter, more sustainable future. Today, Kraftwerk.Rostock is a place where people of all ages can come together to experience the transformative power of art and culture.
