Across the ages, echoes of cannons and the cries of gulls mingle in the salty air here at the Turgut Reis Statue. This imposing monument, crafted by Haluk Tezonar, stands as a testament to a man whose name once sent shivers down the spines of European sailors. Turgut Reis, the “Drawn Sword of Islam,” a name whispered with fear and respect across the Mediterranean. The Turgut Reis Statue, placed on the Sarayburnu coast in 1986, captures the spirit of this legendary admiral. Bedrettin Dalan, Istanbul’s mayor at the time, explained the statue’s placement: “Turgut Reis achieved great success in the Mediterranean. His face always looked towards the Mediterranean. That’s why we placed him here, so that he would face the Mediterranean.” Born in 1485, Turgut Reis’s life was a whirlwind of daring raids, naval battles, and political intrigue. Rising from humble beginnings, possibly Greek Christian or Turkish Muslim, he became a master gunner and skilled sailor. He joined the ranks of the famed corsair Hayreddin Barbarossa, quickly proving his worth in naval warfare. From the pivotal Battle of Preveza, where the Ottoman fleet crushed the Holy League, to the capture of Tripoli, Turgut Reis’s strategic brilliance reshaped the balance of power in the Mediterranean. His capture and enslavement by the Genoese only fueled his resolve. After years of captivity, Barbarossa negotiated his release, a testament to the high regard in which he was held. Turgut Reis went on to become Pasha of Tripoli, fortifying the city and making it a formidable stronghold. He expanded Ottoman influence across North Africa, earning the title of Beylerbey of the Mediterranean. The Turgut Reis Statue captures a glimpse of the admiral’s unwavering gaze toward the sea that was both his battleground and his kingdom. In 1565, during the Great Siege of Malta, fate dealt a cruel blow. While directing the bombardment of Fort St. Elmo, a stray cannonball struck nearby, sending a shard of rock into his head. Days later, he succumbed to his wounds, his dream of conquering Malta unfulfilled. The Turgut Reis Statue stands as a tribute to this remarkable admiral, his legacy etched in the annals of maritime history.
