Amidst the serene slopes of Topkapı Cemetery lies the Turgut Özal Anıt Mezarı. This imposing mausoleum stands as a tribute to Turkey’s 8th president. The Turgut Özal Anıt Mezarı’s construction journey spanned five years, finally opening its doors in 1998. Architect Yılmaz Sanlı masterfully crafted this memorial. It marks a significant moment as Özal became the first Turkish president to be laid to rest in Istanbul. His funeral was a solemn affair. His body, flown from Ankara, rested briefly at Istanbul’s Faculty of Medicine before its final journey to Topkapı. Here, amidst state ceremonies, he was interred. The tomb, a simple yet elegant structure of green granite, measures two meters wide. The top portion, also crafted from green granite, adds a touch of serenity. In 2012, the tomb witnessed a brief reopening. As part of an investigation, Özal’s remains were exhumed and examined. A few days later, they were returned, once more laid to rest with a state ceremony attended by family and dignitaries.
