“Pieces of the sky that have broken into sculptural fragments.” That’s how artist Horatio Hung-Yan Law describes his Ribbon of Light. Here at Cal Anderson Park, we find a series of illuminated glass sculptures. They invite us to reflect on the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

The Ribbon of Light is part of The AMP: AIDS Memorial Pathway. The AMP is a project to remember the fight against HIV/AIDS. It acknowledges discrimination arising during the crisis. This pathway reminds us to stay active and fight scapegoating. We must stand ready to fight discrimination.

Law’s creation features three sculptures. They are named Monolith, Serpentine, and Lambda. These sculptures sit along a landscaped pathway. The pathway runs near the park’s main trail.

Law was inspired by poets impacted by HIV/AIDS. His art embodies the changing nature of grief. The sculptures offer places for quiet contemplation. Visitors can walk the pathway. They can discover hidden messages within the art.

Horatio Hung-Yan Law was born in Hong Kong. He moved to the US at 16. His art explores the Chinese immigrant experience. He reinterprets cultural icons. He also addresses the Iraq War. Law tackles weighty subjects with unexpected materials. This creates evocative works.

The augmented reality app enhances the experience. It offers narratives and images. Interactive experiences surround each artwork. The Names Tree stands as a digital memorial. It recites the names of those lost to AIDS.

The AMP is a community effort. Volunteers and leaders are making it a reality. They include people living with HIV. People of color are involved. Members of the LGBTQIA+ community are too.

The City of Seattle Office of Arts & Culture supports The AMP. Seattle Parks and Recreation is also a supporter. The Seattle Parks Foundation helps too. The State of Washington contributes as well. Gay City: Seattle’s LGBTQ+ Center is a supporter. The Pride Foundation supports the project along with individual donors.

Take a moment to reflect on the Ribbon of Light. Remember those affected by HIV/AIDS. Consider the ongoing fight against discrimination. Let’s appreciate the power of art. Art can create dialogue and foster understanding. This installation is a powerful reminder. It encourages us to remain vigilant. We must always strive for a more inclusive society.
