From the Nahuatl Tonaltonko meaning Home where it feels warm lies Tulantongo. This isn’t just any hot spring resort. It’s a hidden oasis nestled in a box canyon. Imagine walls soaring 500 meters high. The canyon floor boasts a river. This river is heated by a complex system of underground channels. The water flows from two grottos. One is a large chamber. The other a tunnel-like cavern. Both spew warm water. The water’s temperature is around 37 degrees Celsius. It’s pleasantly warm even on cold days.

The Tolantongo resort itself is made up of three hotel complexes. There are heated pools near the canyon’s bottom. It’s a unique cooperative. The Grottos and the resort belong to the Cooperative Ejido Society of the Tolantongo Grottos. This association was formed 30 years ago. 112 families own the ejido. They manage the resort. All workers are from these families. They even dress similarly. This remarkable self-sufficiency began in the 1970s. It’s a testament to community spirit and resourcefulness. Early problems with drugs and violence were overcome through community action. Today Tulantongo is tranquil and well-run.

The canyon itself is a semi-desert zone. It features unique rock formations. These were created by water flow and geological pressure. Layers of sediment are beautifully exposed. Erosion carved capricious forms. The high peaks are often shrouded in mist. Cacti and semi-arid vegetation dominate the hills above the canyon. Higher elevations have pine trees. The biodiversity is impressive. Yucca mesquite and cacti thrive here. You might spot raccoons roadrunners skunks coatis and white-winged doves. Various indigenous peoples inhabited this area. The Otomi Mexica Toltecs and Tepehua all left their mark.

At the canyon’s bottom the vegetation changes. It becomes semi-tropical due to the abundant water and warmth. The beauty even attracted a telenovela crew. They filmed romantic scenes here. The two main grottos are fascinating. The larger one is a karst cave. It was briefly closed in 2004 after a roof collapse. Inside you find stalactites and stalagmites. The temperature noticeably rises. Rimstone pools lie just outside. Visitors can bathe in the shallow river as it rushes past. The tunnel is narrow about 15 meters long. Warm water sprays from the walls and ceiling. It feels like a steam bath. A small pool inside lets you swim among strangely shaped rocks. In both grottos you hear the echoes of the waterfalls. Rappelling is possible but considered dangerous.

Man-made chapoteaderos or splashing pools exist on the canyon walls. These were created by damming small warm springs. Many are shaded by trees. You can bathe in warm water while admiring the canyon. La Gloria is a natural set of three pools. The water temperature is curious. It’s warm in the top pool cool in the middle and warm again in the bottom. Waterfalls trickle and rush around these pools. Camping and sanitary facilities are nearby. Tulantongo is a place where nature’s beauty and human ingenuity blend. It is a place to relax rejuvenate and explore. A true hidden gem.
