Beneath our feet lies the story of Tugu Pamulang. It is a tale of criticism, transformation, and local pride. This monument standing before you represents more than just concrete and design. It embodies the spirit of Pamulang and Tangerang Selatan.

Initially the Tugu Pamulang drew flak. Its original design missed the mark. Locals compared it to a giant birdcage. Social media buzzed with disapproval. The Tangerang Selatan government protested. They felt the design should resemble the Banten Lama mosque tower.

The Banten Provincial Government responded. They launched a design competition. Over one thousand people participated. The goal was to create a monument that reflected the community’s values.

The revitalized Tugu Pamulang cost 700 million Rupiah. Construction took two months. The result is what you see today. The Tugu Pamulang incorporates elements of Tangerang Selatan’s history and culture.

Governor Wahidin Halim inaugurated the revamped Tugu Pamulang on January 8 2022. He explained that the design reflects the history and culture of both Tangerang Selatan and Banten. The monument is now a source of pride for local residents.

The design incorporates meaningful motifs. The jasmine flower represents Tangerang Selatan’s open and attractive nature. Mandalika Batik Banten embodies Prince Arya Mandalika’s wisdom and humility. The Tumpal Batik symbolizes the harmonious Betawi community. It also serves as a ward against misfortune.

The Tugu Pamulang has four main parts. These are the base, pillars and panels, the head or capital and the crown. The wide base supports the entire structure. The pillars and panels feature the meaningful motifs I just described.

Six pillars and panels represent the pillars of Islam. The design is inspired by the Demak Great Mosque. Its pillars and panels resemble a ship’s sails. This evokes the Karangantu Port during the Demak Sultanate era.

The top of the Tugu Pamulang is shaped like a biduk or boat. This symbolizes the Demak Sultanate’s maritime glory. The annual maintenance cost is around 50 million Rupiah. There are plans to install a fence to prevent damage.

One local resident Iwan expressed his pride. He said the Tugu Pamulang is now an iconic landmark. Another resident Joni agreed. He said the monument is much more visually appealing now. Both felt the revitalization was worth the cost.

The Tugu Pamulang stands as a testament to community involvement. It shows how public feedback can shape public art. The monument before you represents a blend of history, culture, and local identity. Take a moment to appreciate the story and symbolism woven into the Tugu Pamulang.
