“A fortune built on tobacco leaves,” the old Istanbulite whispered, gesturing towards the Tütüncü Mehmet Efendi Camii. “Imagine, from street vendor to industrialist.” We stood before the mosque, its stone walls a testament to the life of a man named Mehmet Halis Efendi. Tütüncü Mehmet Efendi Camii, built in the early 20th century, stands as a symbol of his remarkable journey. He started by selling tobacco on the streets of Istanbul. Eventually, with the help of a wealthy acquaintance, he established a tobacco factory in Cibali. This factory supplied the Ottoman army, making Mehmet Efendi a wealthy man. He became known as “Serduhani,” meaning “chief tobacconist.” Later, the government granted a tobacco monopoly to a French company. Mehmet Efendi was forced to sell his factory. With the considerable sum of 95,000 gold coins from the sale, he purchased a vast tract of land in what is now the Göztepe neighborhood. He divided this land into plots and sold them to members of the Ottoman court, who built summer houses there. This marked the beginning of the Göztepe district. In 1902, Mehmet Efendi built the mosque that bears his name, the Tütüncü Mehmet Efendi Camii. Its stone walls, minaret, and two balconies are striking features. The interior boasts two domes and intricate wooden details. In the mosque’s garden, a fountain and an ablution fountain provide a peaceful atmosphere. Nearby, a tomb houses the remains of Mehmet Efendi, his family, and even the mosque’s first imam, his son Kemal Efendi. Even the street connecting Bağdat Caddesi and Minibüs Caddesi, the main thoroughfare of Göztepe, is named after him. Tütüncü Mehmet Efendi Camii is more than just a place of worship. It is a monument to a man who rose from humble beginnings to leave an indelible mark on Istanbul.
