You may already know this prestigious college, Truman College. But did you know that this institution, the largest of the City Colleges of Chicago, was not always called Truman College? Originally, it was known as Mayfair College. Back in 1956, the need for a two‐year college program on the North Side of Chicago was felt by the residents. They wanted a place of higher learning for their community. What started as a night school program at Amundsen High School soon expanded into its own building. It had its own building by 1961 and started serving 4,000 students. Over two decades later, these students found themselves in a new location. In 1976, the college found a permanent home on West Wilson Avenue. They decided to give the new school a name that reflects their focus on public education. It was given the name of President Harry S. Truman, who championed public colleges and universities throughout his career. That’s how this beautiful campus became known as Truman College.
