A symphony of exotic scents wafts from within. Welcome to the Shanghai Museum.
This isn’t just any museum. This is a treasure chest brimming with the artistry and history of ancient China. Founded in 1952 its origins are surprisingly varied. The initial collection was a fascinating mix. Artifacts gathered by the Communist army during the civil war mingled with items confiscated by customs officials. Even pieces sold by private collectors under pressure found their way into this unique assortment.
Over the years the Shanghai Museum grew. Other museums added their collections. Foreign organisations leaving the city in the 1950s contributed further. The expanding collection eventually necessitated a move. The museum’s current location opened in 1996. It stands proudly on People’s Square. Architect Xing Tonghe designed it. Its shape mimics an ancient bronze cooking vessel a ding. The round top and square base represent the ancient Chinese worldview. A round sky above a square earth.
Today the Shanghai Museum boasts over 120000 pieces. These include ceramics bronze calligraphy jade and coins. There are paintings sculptures and even examples of minority art. The museum holds items of national significance. One is a transparent bronze mirror from the Han Dynasty. There are three such mirrors known to exist. The museum also owns a remarkable collection of ancient coins. This collection came from the Silk Road. It spans the history of the Silk Road from the Greeks to the Mongols. It includes 1783 pieces.
