Recall the scent of spiritus? It once permeated this very ground where Trøjborg Centret now stands.

Trøjborg Centret isn’t just a mall. It’s a landmark in Aarhus N with a story etched into its foundations.

Once, this area belonged to Viggo Ormslev. He ran a spirit factory here. In 1907, it merged with “A/S Kjøbenhavnske Spritfabrikker”. A spirit ban during World War I forced its closure. “A/S Jydsk Elektro” bought the buildings in 1919. They operated here until 1968. The buildings were torn down the following year.

The cleared land changed hands several times. Finally, in 1976, an aktieselskab built the Trøjborg Centret. Architect Thomas Bang Termansen designed it.

Trøjborg Centret enjoys a strategic location today. You find it on the corner of Otte Ruds Gade and Nordre Ringgade. Løvbjerg, doctors, dentists, Burger Shack, and Pizzahytten are among its tenants. There is even a parking basement under the building.

In 2021, Trøjborg Centret underwent a major renovation. It gained beautiful new facades and entrances.

Trøjborg itself has an interesting history. The name “Trøjborg” refers to labyrinthine places. In 1632, “Trøjborgbæk” was mentioned. In 1758, a garden called Trøjborg was sold. This likely referenced the hilly landscape around Riis Skov.

The neighborhood grew as a working-class district. This was due to industrialization in the early 20th century. The city walls came down in 1851. This opened the land for development.

From 1896 to 1902, the first 5000 apartments were built. The last were built between 1928 and 1937. Trøjborg’s streets bear the names of Danish naval officers. Tordenskjoldsgade is the main street.

Trøjborg Centret stands as a vital part of the community. With about 100 shops, a cinema, and a local radio station, it offers a unique experience. The Trøjborg Centret isn’t merely a shopping destination. It’s a testament to Trøjborg’s vibrant history. It is a place where the past meets the present.
