Founded in 1874 Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church stands proudly in Chicago. It’s a testament to enduring faith and community. This wasn’t always the case. The church’s journey began much earlier. Missionary work among English-speaking Lutherans started in the 1850s. Dr WA Passavant a key figure is even known as the Father of Holy Trinity. The early years were marked by relocation. The first mission post near Clark and Monroe Streets was short-lived. The congregation moved several times. They eventually found a home at LaSalle and Elm Streets. This location became known as the millionaires church. However membership declined. Financial struggles followed. The church then relocated again to Addison and Maple Square. This move proved beneficial. A new building was dedicated in 1923. Holy Trinity faced changing demographics. In the 1990s it welcomed gay and lesbian couples. This brought about a period of growth. Young adults joined. Families with children added to the vibrant congregation. In 2013 the church launched a second site HTLoop in the South Loop. Two capital campaigns and periods of strategic planning marked the 2010s and 2020s. The pandemic prompted changes. Services were now offered both in person and online. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church has a history rich in adaptation and community. It is a true Chicago institution. The church shows resilience and growth.
