The Trinity College Church, that imposing building with the spire, is something very special. It’s not just a regular church, it’s a place where many worlds come together. The Trinity College Church in Kandy is one of the few open churches in all of Asia. It’s like stepping into a cathedral, only with the beauty of Sri Lanka surrounding you.

The church is incredibly unique, a fusion of English colonial architecture and indigenous Sri Lankan craftsmanship. It was built by the English during a time when colonial powers preferred churches in the Gothic style, but the Trinity College Church is different. They chose to incorporate the beauty of local architecture into their design, creating a grand testament to the richness of both cultures.

The church’s foundations were laid in 1922, but the construction was a lengthy process, stretching over twelve years. During its construction, nearly 100 local craftsmen worked on creating the church, carving the fifty-four stone pillars and intricate wooden beams with such detailed artistry that it’s almost impossible to take it all in. The stone for these pillars was quarried in Aruppola, four kilometers away, and transported to the site by elephants. Imagine the sight, these magnificent animals hauling giant blocks of granite through the hills.

The church’s structure is modelled on traditional Buddhist architecture, inspired by ancient temples in Polonnaruwa, a historical capital of Sri Lanka. It features a high, hipped roof supported by those carved pillars, creating an airy and grandiose interior. The church is open on all sides with no surrounding walls, connecting it to the natural world. The Kandy hill breeze sweeps through the chapel, adding a peaceful element to the space.

The walls of the church are adorned with murals, breathtaking pieces done by a renowned artist and alumnus, David Paynter. These murals are not just beautiful but also historically significant as they depict biblical stories in a tropical Sri Lankan setting. You can see the lush vegetation, the sun-drenched landscapes, and the people. This is a truly unique interpretation of biblical narratives, depicting Jesus with brown skin and short hair, a reflection of the local Sri Lankan culture.

The church’s uniqueness lies not only in its architecture and artistry but also in its symbolism. The Trinity College Church reflects the school’s core values of integrity, service, excellence, and resilience, all embedded in the very design of this iconic structure. As you walk through the grounds, take a moment to appreciate the rich tapestry of history woven into each stone and each intricate carving. You’ll see the story of Sri Lanka and the impact of colonialism, the passion of the architects, and the dedication of the craftsmen, all coming together in an unforgettable architectural masterpiece.
